The 83380 is a true rotating (mechanical) beacon. The only difference between the 83380 and a halogen globe beacon is that the light source is 100% solid state LED.
Sequential (fake rotating) beacons that sequentially switch between LEDs to give a simulated rotating pattern.
A true rotating LED beacon combines the unique light on-time duration properties of a rotating halogen beacon with the reliability of LEDs.

Advantages over halogen rotating beacons:
- Longer life. No filament to wear away or break because of vibration.
- Lower internal running temperatures.
- Lower current draw - typically from 5A reduced down to under 1A (@12VDC)
- LED is multivoltage operation - globes are voltage specific and less tolerant to design overvoltage
- Filament (halogen) lighting has high start up current.

Advantages over sequential (fake rotating) LEDs
- The light pattern from sequential beacons is quite narrow in on-time duration. This narrowness results in less perceived continuous illumination and therefore less impact as a warning device.
True rotators use a reflector to aim and control the light from the LEDs and the on-time duration is perceived as longer due to the time the light takes to transit the reflector's surface.
- The true rotator can provide optimal light focussing while offering varying light intensities at varying viewing angles due to its rotation - something the static angles of sequentials (fake rotators) cannot do.
- As the LEDs in a true rotator are always on while the beacon is in operation, this effect adds to its impact as a warning device.
